The Status app is currently in beta. This means the app is still undergoing active development, and certain features described in this document may function differently or be unavailable in the app.
When you create a new Status profile, the Status app generates cryptographic keys for your profile authentication and authorization. Using a Keycard to store the keys can provide an extra layer of protection.
If you are new to cryto and Keycard, choose the
Generate new keys
option. If you are an experienced Ethereum user, and you want to use the recovery phrase of your existing Etheruem address to create a Status profile, choose the
You need a card reader to connect a Keycard to your computer.
After you create the profile with a Keycard, you must use the same Keycard or biometrics for authentication in the Status app.
Your Keycard stores the cryptographic keys for your Status identity and also secures your wallet accounts. However, it doesn't store your Status profile. Your profile remains on your device until the app is uninstalled, and is temporarily held in the Waku peer-to-peer network.
Set up your device's biometrics (fingerprint, face or other method) to authenticate in addition to Keycard. If you want to enable biometrics later, tap

Enter your recovery phrase if you have one. Otherwise, continue to the next step.
Hold or place the Keycard near the top of your phone to save the Status keys.

On the
Unique profile identifiers
screen, you can learn more about your Status profile or tap
Continue
to finish the profile setup.

Tap
Enable notifications
to set up Status app notifications. If you want to enable notifications later, tap
Maybe later
and then, tap
Start using Status
.

If Status finds an existing profile in the Waku network, you can use your existing profile or the one you have just created. When you choose your existing profile, synchronize this profile with your device.
