Create a Status profile using Keycard

Currently, you can only use Keycard on the Status desktop app.

When you create a new Status profile, the Status app generates cryptographic keys for your profile authentication and authorization. Using a Keycard, the app generates and stores the keys offline permanently, ensuring they never connect to the internet.

tip
If you don't have a Keycard, get one or create your Status profile without a Keycard.

  • You need an empty Keycard to create a Status profile. If your Keycard is not new, view the wallet accounts on your Keycard and factory reset it when needed.
  • You need a card reader to connect a Keycard to your computer.
  • After you create the profile with a Keycard, you must use the same Keycard or biometrics for authentication in the Status app.
  • Your Keycard stores the cryptographic keys for your Status profile and also secures your Wallet accounts. However, it doesn't store your Status profile data (e.g., contacts, profile settings and community membership). Your profile data remains on your device until the app is uninstalled, and is temporarily held in the Waku peer-to-peer network.

If you are new to cryto and Keycard, choose the

Generate keys for a new Keycard
option. If you are an experienced Ethereum user, and you want to use the recovery phrase of your existing Etheruem address to create a Status profile, choose the
Import a seed phrase
 option.

    Open the Status app. Your operating system may ask you to set your notification preferences for Status. If you see the
    Status notifications
     alert, click
    Allow

    Check the box to accept the Status
    Terms of Use and Privacy Policy
     and click
    Get Started
    . You can read these terms on the Status website.

    On the welcome screen, click
    I am new to Status

    Import a seed phrase

    Plug in your Keycard using a card reader, and allow the connection request if you see a security alert from your computer.

    Proceed with the option that works best for you, and move on to create your profile.

      Create a six-digit PIN for your Keycard, and repeat the PIN to confirm.

      Carefully write down the 12-word recovery phrase displayed on the screen. The Status app or your Keycard doesn't save this information, and you can't see it again.

      Verify your recovery phrase by entering the words as required, and then click
      Finish

    Import a seed phrase

      Enter the recovery phrase and click
      Next

      Enter a six-digit PIN for your Keycard, and repeat the PIN to confirm.

    On the
    Your profile
     screen, customize your Status profile with your preferred name, profile picture and colour, and click
    Continue

    Enable your device's biometrics (fingerprint, face or other method). Alternatively, click
    I prefer to use my PIN

    Your emojihash and identicon ring
     screen, you can learn more about your Status profile. Click
    Next

If Status finds an existing profile in the Waku network, you can use your existing profile or the one you have just created. When you choose your existing profile, synchronize this profile with your device.

    Your profile
     screen, set your profile name. Don't use special characters or emojis.

     in your avatar and set a profile picture. Adjust your picture size and click
    Make this my profile picture

     to complete your profile customization.

You can customize additional profile options in your Status settings.
