Status (SNT) has launched the world’s first natively gasless Layer 2 on testnet, built on the Linea zkEVM stack from Consensys.
The network eliminates transaction fees entirely and introduces a new economic model where bridged yield and native app revenues fund builders, liquidity providers, and public goods.
Unlike other L2s that rely on sequencer fees, Status Network captures yield from bridged ETH and stablecoins alongside activity from native apps. This revenue is then redistributed to the community, creating a fully free-to-play environment for games, social platforms, and DeFi.
Gas-free transactions mean users can interact with apps without bridging tokens or topping up balances. Games can deliver true free-to-play mechanics, social apps can offer seamless onboarding, and non-financial apps can run for free. Thanks to the L2 yield, DeFi protocols can benefit from a native yield boost from day one, attracting liquidity providers.
Early adopters include the fishing RPG Cats Fishing, onchain gacha PonziHero from Spla Labs, and metaverse casino Hash Vegas.
The gasless model also improves privacy, as users can transact and interact without needing a pre-funded wallet, enhancing anonymity across applications.
“We designed Status Network so developers can ship games, seamless social experiences, and DeFi protocols without forcing users to preload gas or builders to manage paymaster contracts,” said Cyprien Grau, Lead at Status Network.
“By rehypothecating yield-bearing TVL and sharing every cent of net yield with the community, we’re aligning incentives for all L2 stakeholders: builders get funding, LPs get sustainable returns, and users get a true free-to-play blockchain.”
The approach extends Status’s founding principles into a high-performance platform where communities can build and govern without barriers.
At the centre of the new model is yield, not gas. Assets bridged into Status Network are converted into yield-bearing equivalents (by native ETH staking or rehypothecation), which generate sustainable revenues. Native apps, such as the DEX, will also allocate part of their revenues to the L2 yield.
This creates a cycle where a gasless user experience and organic yield attract more users, deposits, and app usage.
Pending governance approval, part of this yield may also be directed towards SNT buybacks and burns, further strengthening the token’s alignment with network activity.
The development of Status Network follows the original Status whitepaper vision and was initiated through a community vote by SNT holders.
Status Network is the first external collaborator on Linea to co-develop the bridged yield feature, which will be extended across the Linea ecosystem. The project also commits to funding open-source protocols and public goods on Ethereum through its community-managed pool.
“We are proud to see Status Network launch the first gasless Layer 2 powered by the Linea zkEVM stack,” said Head of Linea Declan Fox.
“With free transactions, sustainable funding for builders, and support for public goods, this is exactly the kind of mission-driven design we want to enable. Linea delivers the throughput and fast finality apps need while staying rooted in Ethereum’s security.”
Status Network’s public testnet v1 is now live with fully gasless transactions. Testnet v2 will launch in November 2025, adding RLN-based spam protection and native yield routing, alongside a pre-deposit campaign to activate the bridged yield.
Mainnet launch is targeted for Q1 2026, marking the launch of the first fully gasless, native-yield-powered L2 secured by Ethereum, with community governance and real economic sustainability.
