We are excited to announce that Status has partnered with Linea, the world's most active and lowest-cost zkEVM L2 blockchain, to launch our layer-2 rollup solution – Status Network!
Status Network is designed to be the backbone of the Status ecosystem, delivering the infrastructure we need to support a thriving and decentralised ecosystem of apps and services. We intend to operate Status Network in parallel with Linea, strengthening the decentralisation of the Linea ecosystem while unlocking new opportunities for Status users and the SNT token.
As part of this partnership, Status will join Linea as the first contributor to its open-source code, bringing our technical expertise and experience to the project to strengthen its resilience and decentralisation.
The upcoming Nimbus execution client will also be adapted to include support for the Linea network, and its existing consensus client could be used for sequencer decentralisation.
Let's dive into our plans for Status Network and our partnership with Linea.
We have decided to launch Status Network as a layer-2 rollup solution after we saw strong support for the move in our recent community governance vote.
By launching Status Network, we aim to deliver an infrastructure solution that integrates seamlessly with the Status mobile and desktop apps and progressively with the wider Ethereum ecosystem.
Through the launch of an L2 rollup with Linea, we can build a platform with the capacity to support SocialFi and GameFi apps, governance experiments, the Status voting system, and more – all while aiming to keep transaction costs low and throughput high.
The Status community also voted enthusiastically to introduce an SNT staking mechanism, which we are also working to roll out in order to incentivise engagement and reward long-term commitment.
These exciting changes coming to the Status ecosystem unlock a host of new opportunities for funding, governance, and growth.
We are exploring many ideas to build on Status Network, including the allocation of revenue from L2 operations to a native public funding pool directed by community governance, as well as eventually moving all funding decisions and allocations onchain.
At Status, we are passionate about improving the decentralisation, performance, and resilience of the Ethereum blockchain and ecosystem, and this is amplified through our partnership with Linea, which shares this vision.
"The ultimate goal is to scale Ethereum horizontally," said Status' Cyprien Grau. "We hope to improve the interoperability between both Status Network and Linea while also contributing to the scaling of Ethereum as a layer-1 foundation."
"It's important to not have a black box and be able to collaborate on the same code, and improve the solution for everyone."
For Linea, its decentralisation objectives include allowing users to independently verify code, which is why it has elected to open its code base and onboard Status as a contributor to its project.
The Linea software is licensed under Apache 2.0, a permissive software licence that allows anyone to view, fork, and modify code.
"Our collaboration with Status is a natural fit, given their significant contributions to core Ethereum operations and their strong consumer-facing focus through the Status app," said Linea Global Lead Nicolas Liochon.
"This partnership is a key step towards advancing the Linea ecosystem and driving the decentralisation of our ecosystem."
Thanks to this partnership, Status will contribute to ongoing engineering on Linea, such as supporting client diversity and conducting research for the network's technical decentralisation.
Keep an eye out for more updates, and thank you for your ongoing support and engagement. This partnership is just the first step towards an exciting future for Status!
